About AVIF and PNG
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces remarkably small files with good quality and supports transparency, which is why more and more websites serve images as AVIF. Many desktop programs and image editors still cannot open it, though.
PNG is a lossless format supported everywhere. Converting AVIF to PNG gives you an exact copy of the decoded image that you can edit, print, or place into documents without compatibility problems.
Private by design
- Processed on your device — files are never uploaded.
- Works offline once the page has loaded.
- No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.
Frequently asked questions
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Both AVIF and PNG support a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas look exactly the same after conversion.
Does converting AVIF to PNG reduce quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so you get exactly the pixels decoded from the AVIF. Any compression artifacts in the original stay as they are, but nothing new is added.
Why is the PNG many times larger than the AVIF?
AVIF is one of the most efficient lossy formats, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. Photos can grow 10 times or more. If you need a small file for sharing, convert AVIF to JPG instead.
My browser cannot open AVIF. Will this still work?
Yes. If your browser has no built-in AVIF support, the page loads a small WebAssembly decoder on demand. It also runs locally on your device.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding and saving happen inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent over the network and nothing is stored after you close the page.
