About BMP and JPG

BMP (bitmap) is an old Windows image format that usually stores every pixel without compression. Screenshots from legacy software, scanners, and old games often come as BMP, and the files are huge: a single Full HD image takes about 6 MB.

JPG uses lossy compression designed for photos and realistic images. At high quality it looks practically the same as the original while being 10 to 20 times smaller, and it opens on every device, website, and app.

Private by design

  • Processed on your device — files are never uploaded.

  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my files get?

Usually a lot. A typical BMP photo or screenshot shrinks to between 5 and 15 percent of its original size as a JPG at 90% quality. Images with large flat areas compress the most.

Will I lose quality converting BMP to JPG?

JPG is lossy, but at the default 90% quality the difference is very hard to see in photos. For screenshots with small text, choose 95–100% or convert to PNG instead to keep edges perfectly sharp.

What happens to transparent BMP files?

Most BMP files have no transparency. If yours does, JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default).

Can I convert many BMP files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another and can be downloaded together as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the tool is safe to use with private scans and screenshots.
