Compress JPG images

Make JPG photos small enough for upload forms, email and websites. Enter the size you need and the tool finds the highest quality that still fits — no guessing with quality sliders. Everything runs on your device.

How to compress a JPG

  1. 1

Add your JPG photos by dropping them in, pasting from the clipboard, or clicking “Choose files”.

  2. 2

Enter the maximum file size in KB, or pick one of the common sizes.

  3. 3

Download the compressed JPGs one by one or all together as a ZIP.

How JPG compression to a target size works

JPG compression is lossy: the encoder throws away detail the eye is least likely to notice. The quality setting controls how much is discarded, but the resulting size depends on the photo — a sky compresses far better than a forest.

Instead of making you try quality values one by one, this tool repeatedly encodes the image and narrows down the highest quality whose file is at or below your target. Only if even a low quality is too big does it reduce the pixel dimensions, in small steps, until the photo fits.

Private by design

  • Works offline once the page has loaded.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Frequently asked questions

Will the result really be under the size I enter?

Yes. The tool only accepts an attempt that is at or below the target. 1 KB here means 1024 bytes, so the file also passes forms that count 1 KB as 1000 bytes.

Does compressing reduce the image resolution?

Only as a last resort. The tool first lowers the JPG quality. If the target is so small that even low quality does not fit, it scales the image down just enough to reach the size.

What if my JPG is already smaller than the target?

Then it is returned unchanged, because re-encoding could only make it look worse. You still get a file with “-compressed” in the name.

Can I compress PNG, WebP or HEIC photos here?

Yes. Any image the tool can read is accepted and saved as a compressed JPG. For screenshots and graphics with transparency, the PNG compressor lets you choose the background colour.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs locally in your browser, in a background worker. Your photos never leave your device.
