About WebP and JPG

WebP is a modern image format by Google. Websites use it because it is 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it supports transparency and animation. Some desktop editors, messengers, and upload forms still do not accept it.

JPG is the universal photo format. It does not support transparency, so transparent parts of a WebP image are filled with a solid colour of your choice (white by default).

Private by design

Frequently asked questions

Why do websites give me WebP images instead of JPG?

Sites serve WebP to load faster and save bandwidth. When you right-click and save the image, you get the WebP version the browser received, even if the original upload was a JPG.

Is it safe to convert WebP files here?

Yes. The conversion uses your browser’s built-in image engine. Files are not uploaded, stored, or shared — they never leave your computer or phone.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick in the options. If you need to keep transparency, use the WebP to PNG converter instead.

Are animated WebP files supported?

Animated WebP files are converted using their first frame. JPG is a still-image format, so the animation itself cannot be preserved.

Will the JPG be larger than the WebP?

Usually yes — WebP compresses more efficiently, so the same image as a JPG is often 20–40% bigger. Lower the quality slider or set a maximum width if file size matters.
