About GIF and PNG

GIF is one of the oldest web image formats. It is limited to 256 colours per frame and supports only on/off transparency, but it can hold several frames, which is why it is still used for short animations and simple graphics.

PNG is a lossless format with full colour and smooth alpha transparency. It is the better choice for still images, icons, and graphics you want to edit, and it usually compresses flat-colour artwork as well as or better than GIF.

Private by design

  • Processed on your device — files are never uploaded.
  • Works offline once the page has loaded.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated GIF?

PNG holds a single image, so the converter saves the first frame of the animation as a still PNG. If you need the whole animation, keep the GIF or turn it into a video instead.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG. GIF transparency is all-or-nothing, so edges that looked jagged in the GIF will look the same in the PNG.

Will the PNG look better than the GIF?

It will look identical. The conversion is lossless, but it cannot bring back colours that were removed when the GIF was reduced to 256 colours. What you get is an exact copy in a more flexible format.

Why convert GIF to PNG at all?

Some tools, such as document editors, print services, and icon generators, handle PNG more reliably than GIF. PNG also lets you edit the image later with full colour and soft transparency, which GIF cannot store.

Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?

No. The images are decoded and saved as PNG by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is kept after you close the page.
