Compress PNG images

PNG files are lossless, which makes photos and big screenshots heavy. This tool turns them into compact JPGs that are at or below the size you choose, filling transparent areas with the colour you pick. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress a PNG

  1. 1

Add PNG images or screenshots by dropping them in, pasting with Ctrl+V, or clicking “Choose files”.

  2. 2

Set the target size in KB and choose a background colour for transparent parts.

  3. 3

Download the compressed images, or all of them at once as a ZIP.

Why compressed PNGs become JPGs

PNG never discards detail, so its size is set by the image content, not by a quality setting. A photo or a full-screen screenshot can easily be several megabytes, and lossless re-saving rarely saves more than a few percent.

To hit a specific size, the image has to be stored with lossy compression. JPG is accepted everywhere, so the result is a JPG: the tool searches for the highest quality that fits your target and only scales the image down if that is not enough. JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels get the background colour you choose.

Private by design

  • Processed on your device — files are never uploaded.
  • Works offline once the page has loaded.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the result a JPG and not a PNG?

A PNG cannot be squeezed to an arbitrary size because it is lossless. JPG can trade a little invisible detail for a much smaller file, which is what upload limits require.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a solid colour — white by default. You can choose any colour in the options.

Will text in screenshots stay readable?

Usually yes. The tool always picks the highest quality that fits. With a very small target on a large screenshot it may also reduce the dimensions; choose a larger target if text gets blurry.

How small can I go?

Almost any size. Below a certain point the image is scaled down to fit, so very small targets give small pictures. If even the tiniest version is too big, you get the smallest file possible.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The PNGs are decoded and compressed by your own browser. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
