US passport photo (2×2 inches)

Crop a portrait to 2 × 2 inches — the size commonly used for US passport and visa photos. Typical head-height guide lines help you position the face, and you can download a 600 × 600 pixel JPG and a 4 × 6 in sheet with six copies to print. Your photo stays on your device.

Size: 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), saved at 300 dpi (600 × 600 px)
Typical head height (chin to top of head): 25–35 mm

These are common starting values, not official rules. Requirements differ and change — check the current rules of the authority that will accept your photo and adjust the size if needed.

How to make a US passport photo

  1. 1

Add a recent color photo taken against a plain white or off-white background.

  2. 2

Move and zoom the frame so your head, chin to top of hair, fills the space between the guide lines.

  3. 3

Download the 2×2 photo and, if you need prints, the 4×6 sheet.

US passport photo requirements

The preset is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), saved at 300 dpi, which gives 600 × 600 pixels. The guide lines show a typical head height for this format to help you frame the photo; they are a visual aid, not a check against official rules.

Official requirements for US passport and visa photos also cover background, glasses, expression, how recent the photo is and, for online forms, pixel dimensions and file size. These rules are set and updated by the US Department of State — check its current photo guidance and the instructions of your specific form before you submit.

The tool crops and resizes but does not edit your face or background, so take the picture with the official guidance in mind.

Frequently asked questions

What size does this tool produce?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) at 300 dpi, i.e. 600 × 600 pixels, with the resolution stored in the file. Check the current official guidance to confirm it matches your application.

Can I use the file for an online application?

Many online forms accept a square JPG of around this size, but their exact limits for pixels and file size differ and can change. Read the form’s photo instructions; if it needs a smaller file, use the Reduce photo tools afterwards.

How do I print the photos?

Choose the 4×6 in print sheet — it holds six copies — and print it on photo paper of that size at 100% scale, at home or at a photo kiosk. Do not use “fit to page”. Then cut along the thin lines.

Are glasses or head coverings allowed?

That is decided by the official rules, not by this tool. Check the current US Department of State photo requirements before taking your picture.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Cropping and resizing happen in your browser on your device. The photo is never sent to a server.
